Noah: Just confirming our next appointment with Dr. Lee is tomorrow at 2:00?

Lucy: Yep. You still good to take me?

Noah: Wouldn’t miss it.

Lucy: K, thanks. Pick me up at The Bean?

Noah: Will do. See you then.

I hear the unmistakable growl of Noah’s engine and I glance over at the clock on the wall above the register. Hmm. He’s two hours early.

“Thank you, and have a great day,” I say to the man I’m serving and pass his coffee and bagel across the counter to him. Then I make my way to the other end of the store so that I can see out the large front windows of the cafe. That’s definitely Noah’s muscle car easing up to the curb outside, but I’m surprised to see Mark and Owen climbing out of the vehicle. I watch as Owen comes around to meet Mark on the sidewalk by the driver’s side. They exchange a few words and then he leans over and gives him a quick peck on the lips before proceeding down the street. Mark stands there for a moment, watching him walk away with a soft, almost secret smile on his face. I can’t help smiling too, despite my confusion. It’s so nice to see my friends happy. Owen seems like a great guy and I really hope this works out for Mark.

He turns towards the door and a moment later the welcome bell rings as he enters the café and walks up to greet me at the counter.

“Hey, Luce,”

“Hi.” I shoot him a questioning look and he chuckles.

“I guess you saw the car?”

“Umm … yeah. What’s that about?”

“I’ve been obsessed with that car for years, then last week at work Noah asked me if I was interested in buying it.” He shrugs. “So I did.”

My mouth drops open.

“He whaaat?!” I practically screech and several customers turn their heads to see what the commotion is. “Why would he do that?” I continue, lowering my voice.

Mark just shrugs again. “I didn’t ask, but I sure as hell jumped at the opportunity. That baby is sexy as hell and Noah kept her in pristine condition. The power under that hood? Mm-mm-mm.” He bites his lip while simultaneously shaking his head as though unable to fathom or even stand it.

I’m speechless.

That’s Noah’s baby, his most prized possession, and the cherished link to his pops! I don’t understand why he would do such a thing.

Jill sidles up next to me and proceeds to take Mark’s order, rightly deducing that I’m too shocked to serve him myself. I give him a distracted wave and wander back to my office, head spinning.

When Noah’s head pops through the doorway to my office an hour and a half later I practically pounce.

“What the hell’s going on?”

He rears back in surprise. “What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about your car!”

“Oh. You know about that?”

“I saw Mark driving it this afternoon,” I explain with a raised eyebrow.

“Well, I was going to tell you. Show you … actually.”

I just continue to stare at him expectantly with that that raised eyebrow.
